Skiing in Iran
The special location of the Iranian Plateau between the Alps and Himalayas has led to vast folds in this area, creating the Alborz and Zagros mountain ranges. These mountain ranges include many tall mountains with the tallest being Mount Damavand with 5610 meters of altitude. Mount Damavand is the most prominent peak in Iran and the Middle East and the tallest volcano in Asia. The average altitude of the rest of the mountains in Alborz and Zagros is around 4000 meters. These mighty mountains are covered in snow for most of the year.
The unique location of Iran and the elevation of the Iranian Plateau from the sea level have given it a unique and diverse climate. Iran is one of the few countries in the world with four seasons. The temperature difference between the hottest and coldest spots in the country may reach up to 50 Celsius degrees during winter. For instance, the inhabitants of Shahrekord cope with the bitter coldness at -30 degrees while people living in Ahwaz experience summer weather.
The climate of Iran is divided into 3 categories: the climate of the north of Iran causes hot and humid summers and moderate winters while the western and northwestern parts of the country experience moderate summers and freezing winters and the southern coast has hot summers and moderate winters.
