Welcome to Damavand Expedition Tour. Our journey begins with a 2-3 hour drive (100 km) from Tehran (Hotel/Your Place) to Rineh village (2200m). We’ll have a delicious lunch at a guest house/ hostel in Rineh.
In the afternoon, we explore the village, looking to experience rural life and the culture of the inhabitants. We’ll have dinner at 8 pm and spend the night at Rineh. Sleeping at 2200 meters of height will be a good start for the acclimatization process.
Note 1: We can pick you up from IKA (Imam Khomeini International Airport) in case you arrive in Tehran on day 1, 20€ extra charge will be applied.
Note 2: We can also add extra nights of accommodation in Tehran before the tour begins, according to your preferences (extra charge will apply).
Accommodation: Guest house/Hostel in Rineh Village (2200 m)
Meals included: Lunch | Dinner
Day 2 – Goosfandsara BC (3100m)
We head for a 2 hours long trek to the southern base camp (3100 m high), also called the Mosque or Goosfandsara as it used to be a place to keep sheep, at 7 after having breakfast. We’ll get to the beginning of the dirt road path (2500 m high) by Jeeps (4WD cars) in about 20 minutes. Note that it’s possible take the Jeeps all the way to the base camp however, trekking is recommended as it can improve the acclimatization process by gradually adapting the body to height.
We will have lunch in the basecamp after settling down in our tents/rooms. Having some rest we begin the second phase of the acclimatization process at 3 pm. The process consists of a 2 hour trek up to 3700 meters. After descending to Goosfandsara (taking 1 hour), we end the day by having dinner and getting a good night’s sleep.
Accommodation: Either tents/room in Goosfandsara (Damavand Base camp)
Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner
Day 3 – Bargah-e Sevom (4200m)
Come the third day, we get up at 7, have breakfast and hand our baggages to the mules oweners (porters). Later at 8 we start a 4 hour trek to Bargah-e Sevom hut (4200 m high), taking a normal and technically easy trekking route. Arriving at the hut, we settle in our tents/rooms, have a light meal for lunch to facilitate the digestion process and drink water to stay hydrated. The evening is allotted to resting and spending time on your own. At last we have dinner at 8 pm and go to sleep.
Note: It is possible to choose your type of accommodation (tents/rooms).
Accommodation: Either beds or tents in Bargah-e Sevom
Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner
Day 4 – Abshar-e Yakhi (4900m)
Before summit day today is the final acclimatization day above Bargah-e Sevom. We will have the breakfast at 8 and by 9 we start a 5 hour long trek, consisting of 3 hours of ascending and 2 hours of descending. At the end we’ll reach 4900 meters, almost as high as the location of Abshar E Yakhi (Damavand ice fall).
Our trek will be slow as today is totally allocated to acclimatization. After returning to the hut, we have lunch, rest and prepare for summit day. Finally we have an early dinner at 7 and go to bed at 8.
Accommodation: Either beds or tents in Bargah Sevom (4200m)
Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner
Day 5 – Damavand Summit (5610m)
Here comes the day. It’s time to conquer the most prominent peak in Iran and the Middle East and it normally takes 6 hour (elevation gain: 1460 m). We get up at 4 and after having breakfast we head for the peak at 5. We start trekking from the right ridge and continue on this path until we reach Abshar E Yakhi (Damavand ice fall).
Then we switch to the left ridge up to the triangular rock (almost 5350) known as Damavand fake summit, which is where we see sulfuric hills. At this point the only thing standing between us and the beautiful summit is a 1 hour trek. Standing on the peak of Mount Damavand, we can enjoy the spectacular scenery and if we’re lucky enough to be there on a cloudless day with a clear sky we can see the Caspian Sea and other peaks in Alborz mountain range.
After making some memories by taking photos, we descend back to Bargah-e Sevom through an easier route which accelerate the process. We’ll arrive at Bargah-e Sevom in 3 hours. If we have enough energy we descend back to Goosfandsara during 2 hours after resting and eating at the hut (otherwise we stay at Bargah-e Sevom for the night). Then we’ll take the Jeeps to Rineh village, take the things we need we head to Larijan village to experience the hot spring pool and lamb Kebab which the village is famous for.
Our long and great day ends as we head back to Rineh Village to sleep.
Accommodation: Bargah-e Sevom/Rineh Village
Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner
Day 6 – Damavand Summit Reserved Day
This day is considered as a backup day (reserved day) in case we’re unable to reach Damavand peak for any reasons on the 5th day. You will have another chance to summit Mt Damavand. In case you reached the summit on the 5thday, today would be a relaxed day before getting back to Tehran, in which you will enjoy sightseeing in Rineh Village and visiting Mount Damavand’s surroundings.

June to September is the best time to conquer mount Damavand. During this period the weather is mostly good and snow/ rain scarcely falls. Mount Damavand gets rather crowded during the Persian weekends ( Thursdays and Fridays ). You may have some issues using the facilities available and won’t be able to enjoy the silence of the mountain as many mountain climbers and adventurers come to Mount Damavand at this time. Therefore, it’s best to choose one of the weekdays of the Persian calendar for the beginning of your Damavand trekking tour. In short, by having proper acclimatization. At first, your guide will contact a doctor and then mountain rescue and the Iranian red crescent society if necessary. Rescuing by helicopters is also possible for severe cases if the weather is stable. Yes. Please inform us of any special diseases such as cardiac disease, respiratory disease or brain lesion background or any prescription drugs you need to take. Also please let us know if you’re on a special diet (vegetarian, vegan, etc.) or have allergy to any type of food (spices, gluten, lactose). Each mountain climber may prefer either types of accommodation based on his/ her personality . The Damavand southern hut gets very crowded during Mount Damavand high season, especially on Iranian weekends. Using the Hut the noises may disturb your rest especially in the midnight and early in the morning when everyone is preparing to have breakfast and leave. However, you’ll have the privileges of a bed to sleep on and enough space to put your stuff. On the other hand , staying in a tent is more peaceful as the tents are set up away from the Hut. You’ll also get a ground cloth and a blanket along with your tent. Please contact us before choosing any of the options. Mountain climbers normally leave the camp at 5-6 in the morning. However, this depends on several factors such as the weather at Damavand summit, the progress rate of the team, the general physical condition of the mountain climbers the night before Damavand summit day, the temperature early in the morning, wind speed, time of sunrise and sunset, etc. Your guide will consider all of these factors and measure the progress rate of the team before deciding on the time to leave on your Damavand summit day. You can request different types of food when booking your tour and we’ll replace the dishes we normally serve with your preferred ones if possible. We generally recommend hot watery dishes such as soup and dishes that are rich in carbohydrates and proteins such as pasta and rice with meat or soybeans as these types of food are easily digested and give you maximum energy at high altitudes. You only need to carry the amount of water you’ll need during each trekking day as your Damavand trekking tour is full-board. We recommend you have 1.5 liters (one big bottle) of water for the trek between Damavand basecamp and Damavand high camp (Bargah-e Sevom Hut) and the same amount plus a flask of warm water for your Damavand summit day. You’ll be given daily some juice and cola during your Damavand trek as well. You’ll be given bottled mineral water daily for trekking, also hot water will be always provided in the camps. Note that staying hydrated can help your acclimatization process. There are seasonal rivers supplied by the melted snow. However, it’s recommended to not drink this water as it contains sulfur and other natural impurities and may cause stomach aches. Yes there is drinkable bottled mineral water available at all of Mount Damavand camps. Yes, there are toilets at Damavand southern basecamp and third camp (Bargah-e Sevom Hut) that you can use while paying attention to hygiene. There are no toilets between Mount Damavand camps and between the high camp and Damavand peak. No, the normal route leading up to Damavand summit is amoderate trail. Your Iranian mountain guide will provide you with the necessary equipment to pass these parts. No. It’s generally not recommended to bathe at Mount Damavand to avoid catching cold. You’ll be able to bathe at Rineh or Polour village before and after your Mount Damavand climbing. For more information, you can read the article Damavand Volcanic Crater and Sulfuric Gas. The Damavand route you’ll take when descending the mountain depends on several factors. Some mountain climbers choose the same route they came from for descending while others choose a faster route which is covered by gravel. An amazing trip climbing Damavand and visiting Tehran
I conquered Damavand and visited Tehran with Cheetah adventures during summer. At first I was reluctant about traveling alone but my guide Mehrdad and the rest of the team made me feel included and were very friendly. Mehrdad was very responsible and a professional mountain climber. He took care of everything during the trek. The trek was planned very well and because of acclimatization I didn’t feel sick as we got higher. The beauty of Mount Damavand is unspeakable and we also saw the Caspian Sea from the peak. After we came back we went to this village and had a very delicious lamb kebab and relaxed in natural hot spring that felt very good after trekking for 4 days. We came back to Tehran later on and Maryam showed me around the city. She knew a lot about the history and showed me Golestan palace and Abgineh museum, told me about Qajar and Pahlavi kings and took me to a great restaurant in Tehran Bazaar. Cheetah adventures made my trip amazing and I want to thank everyone involved especially my guides Mehrdad and Maryam. I wish I had more time to stay in Iran but there will definitely be another trip to Iran for me.
