Introduction
Mount Damavand (5610 m) is the most prominent peak in Iran and the Middle East and the highest volcano in Asia.
Conquering this potentially active volcano is possible through 4 main routes, all of which have stunning beauties.
The Northeastern Ridge of Mount Damavand is also the most beautiful one due to the glaciers such as Aroosak ha, Dobisel, Siole Glaciers and the well-known Yakhar Glacier surrounding it. This route is more difficult than the southern route and thus is less crowded during the high season. Many animal species such as mountain goats and eagles can be seen on this route.
In addition, the effect of sulfuric gases is less on this route. Despite being a bit cold and difficult, conquering Damavand summit by the northeastern route creates a memorable experience for mountaineers. This trekking tour is most suitable for those who wish to climb Mount Damavand differently.

Travel Itinerary
Day 1 – Drive to Nandal Village (2300m), Transfer to Gardaneh Sar Goosfandsara (3000m), Acclimatization
This morning you will meet your guide at 9:00 at your hotel and you’ll drive to Polur village after checking your equipment (2 hrs, 90 km). Arriving at Polur you’ll have lunch before continuing on your path to Nandal village (1.5 hrs ,70 km). You also get to see Mount Damavand from the southern ridge in Polur village. Nandal village (2300 m), located north of Damavand, is a rather humid village due to its closeness to Caspian Sea. Arriving at Nandal village, you’ll be picked up by jeeps/trucks. You’ll get to the northeastern base camp of Damavand, Gardaneh Sar Goosfandsara (3000 m) and camp there. Afterwards, you’ll trek up to 3500 meters of altitude as part of the acclimatization process (1-2 hrs). You’ll descend to Gardaneh Sar and spend the night there.
Accommodation: Tents at Gardaneh Sar (3000 m)
Meals included: Lunch | Dinner | Snacks
Day 2 – Trek to Takht-e Fereidun (4350 m), Acclimatization
You’ll have breakfast at 7:00 and leave Gardaneh Sar for Takht-e Fereidoun (4350m, 5-6 hrs). Takht-e Fereidoun, meaning the Throne of Fereidoun, is the high camp of the northeastern ridge on Mount Damavand. Its name refers to the big rock nearby that resembles a throne and Fereidoun an Iranian hero. Unfortunately you’re not able to see Damavand summit on your way. You’ll reach Sabze Lash field after 4 hours of trekking and can enjoy the delightful air and the beautiful scenery. The summit can be seen from Sabze Lash at 4000m. Getting at Takht-e Fereidoun you’ll have lunch and then go for another acclimatization trek (up to 4700 m, 2 hrs). At the end, you’ll descend to Takht-e Fereidoun and spend the night there in tents.
Accommodation: Tents at Takht-e Fereidoun (4350 m)

Day 3 – Damavand Summit Day (5610 m), Descend back to Nandal
Today is the day you’ll step on Damavand summit. You’ll get up at 4:00 and leave the camp at 5:00 after having breakfast. The route going up to the peak is shorter compared to the southern route, due to the altitude of the high camp, However; it’s steeper and a little bit more difficult. You’ll have to trek over a rocky ridge but the route is perfectly safe. On your left you can see the stunning landscape of Yakhar Valley and Yakhar Glacier. You’ll reach the summit after 5 to 6 hours. Standing on the summit, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery around and take some pictures to make your day more memorable. If the sky is cloudless, it’s also possible to see the Caspian Sea from the summit. You’ll descend back to Takht-e Fereidoun Camp by the same route you came from (2-3 hrs). After having lunch at Takht-e Fereidoun you’ll descend to Gardaneh Sar where you’ll take the jeeps/truck back to Nandal Village. We will have a tasty dinner and overnight in Nandal Village.
Note: In case you’re too exhausted to descend all the way back it’s possible to spend the night at Takht-e Fereidoun and descend to Gardaneh sar on the 4th day.

Additional Information
Damavnd Trekking Routes:
The southern route is the most well-know of all. This route is mostly chosen because of its facilities such as the hut located at 4200 meters, with electricity, toilets and beds available, and its ease, omitting the need for ropes and gears. However, other routes such as the northern and western ones are more difficult and there aren’t any suitable huts available.
Weather condition:
June to September is the best time to conquer mount Damavand. During this period the weather is mostly good and snow/ rain scarcely falls. However, our guides are committed to checking the weather prior to each program. In case of an unpredicted bad weather extra days will be added to your tour.
Acclimatization and Preparation:
Our acclimatization program is resulted from years of experience in guiding various types of people through their hike and is set to be suitable for people living in locations that are near sea level high. But even people who haven’t experienced more than 3000m of height won’t have any issues during their journey.
Our Guides:
Our guides are qualified mountain climbers with years of experience in leading tours and a history of conquering 7000/8000 meter high peaks in Himalia mountain range in their resume.
In addition to their experience and thorough knowledge of mountain routes, our guides have taken multiple courses in rescuing and first aid to assure our fellow mountain climbers’ safety throughout the trek.

An amazing trip climbing Damavand and visiting Tehran
I conquered Damavand and visited Tehran with Cheetah adventures during summer. At first I was reluctant about traveling alone but my guide Mehrdad and the rest of the team made me feel included and were very friendly. Mehrdad was very responsible and a professional mountain climber. He took care of everything during the trek. The trek was planned very well and because of acclimatization I didn’t feel sick as we got higher. The beauty of Mount Damavand is unspeakable and we also saw the Caspian Sea from the peak. After we came back we went to this village and had a very delicious lamb kebab and relaxed in natural hot spring that felt very good after trekking for 4 days. We came back to Tehran later on and Maryam showed me around the city. She knew a lot about the history and showed me Golestan palace and Abgineh museum, told me about Qajar and Pahlavi kings and took me to a great restaurant in Tehran Bazaar. Cheetah adventures made my trip amazing and I want to thank everyone involved especially my guides Mehrdad and Maryam. I wish I had more time to stay in Iran but there will definitely be another trip to Iran for me.
