Mount Damavand (5610 m) is the most prominent peak in Iran and the Middle East and the tallest volcano in Asia. This potentially active volcano attracts many mountain climbers every year. This Damavand trekking tour is suitable for those who are willing to conquer Mount Damavand safely and successfully and are in a good physical shape. This Damavand tour includes a precise acclimatization plan mostly suitable for those who don’t need to spend much time adapting to high altitudes. During this tour you’ll be ascending to Damavand summit through the southern route which is considered the easiest and passes by the best equipped huts and shelters in Mount Damavand. You’ll be accompanied by a professional mountain guide and experience a successful and memorable Damavand trek under his guidance. In addition, you’ll get the chance to taste the delicious lamb kabab of Larijan and relax in a natural hot spring. This Damavand trekking tour can be preceded by a Tochal trekking tour or Alam-Kuh trekking tour for better acclimatization.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Goosfandsara BC (3100 m)

Drive to Rineh Village, Transfer to Basecamp (3100m), Acclimatization trek up to 3700m

You will be greeted by your Damavand trekking tour guide and be picked up from your hotel/hostel. After having breakfast on the first day, Our journey begins with a 3 hour drive ( 100 kilometers ) from Tehran ( Hotel or Our office ) to Rineh ( 2200m high), A small village located at east of Tehran. We will have lunch (delicious homemade food) at a guest house in Rineh, where we can leave our extra baggage. After buying everything we need we head to the Southern Base camp of Mount Damavand (3100 meters, 45 minutes away) by SUV cars (Jeeps).

The southern Base camp is called The Mosque or Goosfandsara (meaning a place for sheep) as it used to be where local shepherds brought their flocks before trekking Mount Damavand became popular. We begin our acclimatization process at 4 o clock and after settling down in our tents. The process consists of a two hour trek up to 3700 meters. After descending to Goosfandsara ( taking 1 hour), we end the day by having dinner and getting a good night’s sleep in private tents or rooms (as preferred).

Goosfandsara (Damavand Base Camp)

Day 2 - Bargah-e Sevom 4200m

Trek to Bargah-e Sevom (Damavand southern shelter at 4200m), Acclimatization trek up to 4700m

On the second day we get up at 7 and hand our baggages to the porters. Later at 8 we start a 4 hour trek to Bargah E Sevom hut (4200 m high), taking a normal and technically easy trekking route. After settling in our tents/rooms, having a light lunch to avoid issues due to elevation gain, drinking water to stay hydrated and getting some rest, we begin the second acclimatization trek at 3 o clock. The process involves a 2 hour trek during which we’ll reach 4700 meters and descending to the hut takes about 1 hour.

Afterwards, we have dinner at 7. Our meal should be rich in carbohydrates, like pasta, to provide us with enough energy. At last, we go to bed at 8 as we’ll have to get up at 5 the following day.

Day 3 - Damavand Summit (5610m)

Trek to Damavand Summit (5671m), descend to Basecamp, transfer to the village, and rejuvenate in hot spring pool.

The day we’ve been waiting for finally arrives. It’s time to conquer the most prominent peak in Iran and the Middle East and it will only take 6 hours (elevation gain: 1460 m). We get up at 4 and after having breakfast we leave the hut at 5. Our route to the peak doesn’t have technical difficulties. We start trekking from the right ridge of the mountain and continue on this path until we reach Abshar E Yakhi (Damavand ice wall).

We continue our journey on the left route until we reach the triangular rock (almost 5350), which is where we start seeing sulfuric hills. At this point we’re only one hour of trekking away from conquering Damavand’s magnificent peak. Standing on the peak, we can enjoy the beautiful landscape and if we’re lucky enough to be there on a cloudless day we can see the Caspian Sea and other peaks in Alborz mountain range. After making this day timeless by taking photos we start descending back to Bargah E Sevom around noon. The route is easier than our ascending route and it’ll take us 3 hours to get to the hut.

After resting and eating at the hut we descend back to Goosfandsara in two hours and take the SUV cars to Rineh village. Afterwards, we take our swimming suits and head to Larijan village to experience the hot spring pool and lamb Kebab that it’s famous for. Our adventurous day ends as we get back to the hotel to sleep.

Note: In case exhaustion makes you unable to get back to Goosfandsara, it’s possible to spend the night at the hut.

Day 4 - Drive back to Tehran

Drive back to Tehran

Waking up at 10 in the morning after getting enough sleep the previous night, we have breakfast and pack our bags and say our goodbyes to get back to Tehran. We’ll leave at 11 and it’ll take us 2 hours to get to Tehran. You will be dropped off at your hotel or any other requested location. It’s also possible to add Tehran sightseeing to the 4^th day.

note: in case you choose to stay at the hut on the third day we’ll descend back to Goosfandsara on the fourth day and leave for Tehran after arriving at Rineh village.

Damavnd Trekking Routes:

The southern route is the most well-known of all. This route for trekking mount Damavand is mostly chosen because of its facilities such as the hut located at 4200 meters, with electricity, toilets and beds available, and its ease, omitting the need for ropes and gears. However, other routes such as the northern and western ones are more difficult and there aren’t any suitable huts available. read more about Damavand Trekking Routes.

Damavand Weather condition:

June to September is the best time to conquer mount Damavand. During this period the weather is mostly good and snow/ rain scarcely falls. However, our guides are committed to checking the weather prior to each program. In case of an unpredicted bad weather extra days will be added to your Damavand tour. read more about Damavand’s weather conditions.

We wanted to thank Ali and Mehdad for their hospitality, professionalism, loyalty to their work and awesome memories. First of all Ali helped us to get a visa in a matter of two days, which is crazy fast. Without getting any money in advance because there was a problem with transactions from our side. He did it based on pure trust. Then already in a country we accidentally left our passports in Teheran, cause of the hotel’s policy, they take your passport while you stay there, and after being checked out walking around in different city, we remembered about such a tiny thing like your passport being left out in another country, Ali helped to resolve this problem too. Which we were really grateful for.  Besides all the views and all the history. It was top-notch. The  most memorable trip abroad so far, thank you guys for everything. Our trip to Iran could not have been better prepared and organized. My husband and I traveled with our 6 year old daughter for the last 3 weeks during a time of change in Iran. As part of our family has a US passport, we had great support by Ali to make sure our Visas are processed accordingly. It was not easy but it all worked out with Ali’s help.Ali and his guides Farid and Mousse took great care of us and were very knowledgeable about the history and places we visited. We did not feel as normal tourists on this trip but we were treated as friends and family throughout the entire time of our trip. The Iranian people are warm, welcoming and extremely friendly. When is the best time to climb Mount Damavand?

Damavand trekking season begins in mid-June and ends in mid-September. The best time to climb Mount Damavand is during the summer when the weather is stable and the warmest. You can also find detailed information about Damavand weather reading the Mount Damavand Page.

What level of physical fitness is required to climb Mount Damavand?

The level of physical fitness necessary to climb Mount Damavand depends on various factors such as your current level of physical fitness, experience in being at high altitudes, the length of your Damavand trekking tour, and the amount of time that will be spent trekking each day of the tour. Generally speaking, if you can afford 10 hours of hiking a day you can conquer the summit following the provided acclimatization plan and your mountain guide's tips. Can I rent the Damavand trekking equipment or do I have to bring them ?

Providing trekking equipment and clothes is not a service included in any of our Iran trekking tours. However, you can rent some of the equipment you don't have or can't bring from us. It's recommended to use your own trekking boots to make sure you're comfortable but you can rent other equipment such as sleeping bags, ground cloths, trekking poles, and clothes ( if available in your size). You can request the equipment you don't have after checking the list of necessary equipment for a Damavand trekking tour on our website.

Which of the Damavand trekking routes is the easiest?

The southern route is the easiest Damavand trekking route due to many factors such as having a gentle slope, being non-technical, and having many facilities at the Damavand camps on this route. Will I have access to cellphone signals and WI-FI during my trek up to Damavand peak?

Yes, you'll have access to a cellphone ( mobile phone) signals up until near Damavand peak. You can ask Cheetah-Adventures for a portable Wi-Fi modem as a complimentary service. We recommend you focus on enjoying your Damavand trek on the summit day and don't worry about staying connected. Your guide can contact the camp using both his mobile phone and a walkie-talkie in case of emergencies.

What should women wear while climbing Mount Damavand?

Women can dress freely while at Mount Damavand. They can wear trekking pants, t-shirts and caps. However, a certain dress code applies to women when in the city while traveling in Iran. You can get complete information on Iran dress code Page.

What happens if the weather is unstable on the Damavand summit day?

Our experts will check the weather in advance and inform you if it will be unstable during your Damavand trekking tour; however, the weather is usually stable during summer when our Mount Damavand tours are performed. In addition, we normally include a back-up day ( reserved day ) to our Iran trekking tour itineraries in case such problems occur. You can also ask for an extra day during your Damavand trekking tour with an extra charge if it's not included in your tour package.

How can I get an Iran visa for my Iran trekking trip ? How much does it cost? How long does the process take?

Obtaining an Iran visa normally takes around two weeks for citizens of most countries. The process takes between about 2 months and sometimes more for passport holders of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada (ABC nationals). Visa services are included in our Mount Damavand trekking tour packages. If you're not traveling with us, you can request a visa service or apply for it on your own.
