Mountain profile
Damavand trekking tour packages
Mount Damavand is located in northern Iran in the Alborz Mountain Range. It is the most prominent peak in Iran and the Middle East and the highest volcano in Asia.
This potentially active volcano rises 5,610 meters above sea level. Some sources still repeat an older figure of 5,671 meters, but the measurement used throughout this guide is 5,610 meters.
Its topographic prominence is 4,661 meters. The original guide places Damavand 12th among the world’s peaks when ranked by relative height.
Winter wind chill can produce a real-feel temperature near -60°C. In July and August, high-altitude temperatures are commonly around 5°C to -5°C, so appropriate mountain clothing remains essential.
Weather & timing
The best time to climb Mount Damavand
During winter and early spring—from December to late March—high-altitude equipment is essential because of severe cold and winter conditions. In late February and March, unstable weather can also make it difficult to find a suitable weather window.
The best time to climb Mount Damavand for more stable weather, an easier ascent, and a longer weather window is generally mid-June to September.
The exact season can begin two or three weeks earlier or end later depending on snowfall, rain, and the preceding winter and spring.
June: the most beautiful month
In June, tulips and poppies can be seen across Lar Plain and around Goosfandsara. Melting snow near Bargah-e Sevom feeds streams and gives the lower mountain a greener landscape.
June can also be quieter than July and August. Those two summer months are the busiest, especially around Iranian weekends on Thursday and Friday. By October, temperatures fall and snow becomes more frequent.
Climbing Damavand outside the main season
Regular Damavand trekking tours are not normally offered in winter. Climbs may still be possible for experienced mountaineers with appropriate winter equipment, suitable fitness, and an experienced guide after a careful conditions assessment.

Why this mountain
Mount Damavand’s unique features
Damavand combines exceptional topographic prominence, volcanic landscapes, non-technical normal routes, and the possibility of completing a carefully paced climb within a relatively short trip.
01
A 5,610-metre summit
Damavand is the most prominent peak in Iran and the Middle East and one of the world’s most prominent mountains.
02
A potentially active volcano
Sulfur hills and vents close to the summit reveal Damavand’s volcanic character.
03
A comparatively budget-friendly adventure
Climbing Damavand generally costs less than many expeditions on peaks of a similar altitude.
04
A summit possible within a week
A normal guided itinerary commonly takes five or six days, depending on acclimatization, route, weather, and the climber.
05
A reason to explore Iran
The climb can be combined with cultural, historical, and nature-focused journeys elsewhere in Iran.
06
A realistic summit objective
The normal trekking routes are not technical, although altitude, weather, and fitness must still be taken seriously.
07
Lower objective hazards on normal routes
Compared with many peaks at a similar elevation, normal summer routes have relatively low exposure to crevasses and avalanches.
08
Accessible to prepared trekkers
Most normal routes do not require ropes or harnesses, but good fitness, acclimatization, suitable equipment, and professional judgment remain essential.
Choose your approach
Damavand trekking routes
Damavand has 16 ridges, but four routes are used most frequently. Access, shelters, scenery, gradient, rockfall exposure, and available support vary considerably.
01
Hardest · limited facilities
Northern route
Beginning near Nandal village, this route passes between the Siole and Dobi Sel glaciers. It uses two high shelters and is considered the hardest of the four common routes because of steepness and limited facilities.
02
Scenic · Takht-e Fereydon
Northeastern route
Accessible from Nandal or Gazane villages, this route passes Takht-e Fereydon shelter at about 4,350 metres. Yakhar Glacier and the valley remain in view, and many mountaineers consider this the most beautiful route.
03
Remote · Simorgh shelter
Western route
Reached from Polour by a long dirt road above Lar Plain, the western route passes Simorgh shelter at about 4,250 metres. Lar Lake and Damavand’s sunrise shadow are highlights, while rockfall risk above the shelter requires care.
04
Most accessible · best facilities
Southern route
Accessible from Rineh and Polour, the southern route reaches Goosfandsara base camp and Bargah-e Sevom, the best-equipped hut on Damavand. Its gentler slope, access, mule support, and facilities make it the most common and easiest normal route.
Easiest and hardest: The southern route is generally considered the easiest because of access, facilities, and a gentler ascent. The northern route is the hardest of the four common routes because it is steeper and has fewer support facilities.
